CREATE A COWL-ALONG: Sunday 13th September, 10.30am-1.30pm UK TIME
Regular price £40.00
Date: Sunday 13th September
Duration: 3 hours
We invite you to join us for our online pattern-cutting class all about cowl necklines. In 3 hours, this class will cover everything you need to know to create an elegant cowl neckline from scratch.
Using our Iceberg Dress pattern* as a base we will walk you though step-by-step three different methods to draft a cowl neckline to your own measurements. You will learn how to take the right measurements to avoid any nasty surprises, how to work with the bias, which fabrics to choose and appropriate finishing and sewing techniques.
We’ll look back to the 1930s - the golden era of the cowl - for inspiration and discuss how cowl styles can work on different body shapes - as well as body parts! Did you know that it’s not only a neckline that you can cowl? We’ll also show you to hack a cowl into any sleeve, skirt and even trouser pattern!
From a cosy jersey top with 3/4 sleeves for autumn, a slinky slip dress for summer or a dramatic statement evening gown - once you’ve mastered the basic principles you’ll be ready to add a cowl to everything in sight!
The class will take place as a video meeting via Zoom so you can interact and ask questions along the way. Places are limited to make it as much like an in-person class as possible. 25% of the profits from this class will go to Impact Lebanon.
What you will need
- A copy of our Iceberg Dress pattern (please choose the appropriate option when you purchase the class whether or not you already own the Iceberg Dress pattern)
- Some large pieces of paper – pattern cutting paper if you have it but otherwise newspaper will be fine (preferably a broadsheet). A roll of brown paper or even wrapping paper is also a good option. Otherwise just tape together whatever you can find!
- A tape measure (we draft in metric , so you’re more used to inches, a dual tape-measure will be handy - or we can help you to convert along the way)
- Sticky tape
- Paper scissors
*If you already own the Iceberg Dress pattern then please choose the option without the pattern included

3x Patterns in A0, A4 and US Letter sizes
*Please make sure you read the following instructions carefully before printing!*
For A4/US Letter: it is vital to make sure your pattern prints at full scale or the sizing will not be correct. Your print settings should be set to 'full scale', '100%', 'actual size' or equivalent according to your printer software.
There are two test squares on the first page of every pattern: a 5cm and a 2" square.
Print only this page first and check your square measures up, before printing the rest of the pattern.
For A0 copy shop: follow the instructions given by your chosen copy shop.
