Vogue says that the barrel-leg trouser is the style of the 2025, so let's get drafting our own versions!

In this 2-hour online class we will show you step-by-step how to take a trouser block and turn it into a barrel-leg design. You can use your own trouser block or use our own specially drafted trouser blocks (see more details on these below!)

The key feature of our barrel leg design is the removal of the side seams and merging of the yoke. We’ve developed two variations on this theme - the ‘spiral leg’ and the ‘column leg’ - and we’ll teach you both during the class, as well as lots of ideas for further customisation. The design is modern, smart and stylish, but as comfortable as tracksuit bottoms - Alice hasn’t taken hers off since she made them!

Once you’ve mastered the trouser fit, they are a quick and satisfying make and you’ll want to whip up several pairs, and you will have all the know-how to do so.

The class will cover fit, design, finishes and fabrics.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • How to choose a trouser block (if you haven’t already got your own)
  • The 3 bum shapes! How to identify which one you are to guarantee fit and style success
  • The rules of trouser design, and then how to break them!
  • How to transform a trouser block into a barrel-leg design
  • How to turn a design into a useable pattern
  • How to draft a spiral seam, and how to sew it!
  • How to sew your trousers up on an overlocker and/or a regular sewing machine
  • How to choose suitable fabric and haberdashery
  • Variations and inspiration for further designs and customisations

ABOUT THE TROUSER BLOCK/SLOPER

If you already have your own well-fitting trouser block then you can use this as the basis for your barrel-leg designs (perhaps drafted at one of Alice's Telestia classes, or you have already taken our ALL ABOUT TROUSERS class).

If not, no worries! Please select the 'class + block' option and we will provide you with x3 trouser block/sloper options, based on different hip-waist ratios to use as your starting point. These trouser blocks were developed for our ALL ABOUT TROUSERS online class and are based on the Telestia system we always use for our patterns to ensure a good fit for most figures. The size range is UK 6 to 26. The blocks are downloadable as a pdf in paper sizes A4, US letter and A0.

What you will need

During the class you will follow along using mini-blocks which we will provide for you to download and print out in advance.

You will also need basic drafting supplies: paper, pencils, rubber, sticky tape, ruler and a tape measure.

How the class works

The class will take place as a live video meeting via Zoom so you can interact and ask questions along the way.

Once you sign up you will receive a download which includes all the details of how to join the class community, as well as pdf mini-blocks to download. We will use these to follow along with the drafting during the live class.

On the morning of the class you will also receive a direct link to join via Zoom. Please note that you will need to be subscribed up to our newsletter in order to receive emails from us (there is a checkbox when you sign up for the class)

The class will be recorded and hosted in our own private online community (not Facebook!) so you can go over it in your own time, and continue to ask questions after the live session. The recording will be available to you forever.

DOWNLOAD INFORMATION

How to download your Alice & Co Pattern

Alice & Co patterns are provided in three different page formats and are designed to be printed in colour.

Once you have purchased your pattern you will be given a download link. This will also be emailed to you so don't worry if you don't want to download it straight away!

The download will consist of a zip file containing 4 separate PDF files:

1x Pattern Instructions
3x Patterns in A0, A4 and US Letter sizes

*Please make sure you read the following instructions carefully before printing!*

For A4/US Letter: it is vital to make sure your pattern prints at full scale or the sizing will not be correct. Your print settings should be set to 'full scale', '100%', 'actual size' or equivalent according to your printer software.

There are two test squares on the first page of every pattern: a 5cm and a 2" square.

Print only this page first and check your square measures up, before printing the rest of the pattern.

For A0 copy shop: follow the instructions given by your chosen copy shop. Services are also available online - we recommend Patternsy - who print on lightweight tissue paper with very speedy delivery to anywhere in the world! Once you have purchased your pattern from us, simply click on the link above to go to their website and follow the steps to upload your pattern.

Comment télécharger votre patron Alice & Co Pattern
